A dead 8-year-old child was found in the back of a car after the driver was fatally shot by police this week.
On Thursday, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office announced that law enforcement officials were working alongside their counterparts from Maine to investigate an incident involving a man that killed a female at a residence in Troy, New Hampshire.
According to the attorney general’s office, police encountered the man—who has not yet been identified—on the Piscataqua River Bridge, which connects New Hampshire and Maine. Police fatally shot the man during the encounter and later discovered that there was an 8-year-old child who was fatally shot inside the man’s vehicle.
New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella said in a press release that the incident “appears to have started with an adult male killing an adult female at a residence in Troy, New Hampshire, overnight and then driving to the Piscataqua River Bridge on Interstate 95 at the Portsmouth, New Hampshire, state line with Kittery, Maine.”
Regarding the discovery of the deceased 8-year-old in the man’s car, Formella’s office said that “the exact circumstances surrounding this incident remain under active investigation.”
“There is no threat to the general public at this time. The I-95 Piscataqua River Bridge remains closed in both directions due to the ongoing investigation. Traffic is currently being diverted to the two other local bridges in the area. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes,” Formella’s office said.
Formella also said that his office was planning to investigate the officer-involved shooting of the unidentified man.
Following the incident, police closed down down the Piscataqua River Bridge for several hours.
“I-95 Northbound and Southbound at the Piscataqua River Bridge “High Rise Bridge” is closed due to an active incident. Troopers are on scene. Drivers should anticipate delays and avoid the area if possible,” the New Hampshire State Police said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday morning.
At around 5:22 a.m. ET on Thursday, the New Hampshire State Police said that the situation was still active and the bridge remained closed as officials continued their investigation.
In another post at 9:38 a.m. ET, the New Hampshire State Police said: “The Piscataqua River Bridge is now fully open. Traffic is flowing but moving slow. Drivers should anticipate delays.”
Prior to the incident on Thursday morning, Formella said that his office was looking into the “suspicious death” of the adult female in Troy.
“The exact circumstances surrounding this incident remain under active investigation,” the attorney general said.
Additional information on the incident is expected to be released later on Thursday.
